Topline findings

Rider risk is not just a big-city problem

The analysis highlights where fatality rates are highest after accounting for population size.

Volusia County stands apart

With 6.22 fatalities per 10,000 residents (367 total deaths), Volusia County, which is the home to Bike Week, is by far the deadliest county for motorcycle riders in Florida.

Smaller corridors rank highly

Flagler (4.34 per 10k), Citrus (4.32 per 10k), and Pasco (3.93 per 10k) counties round out the top four, indicating that mid-sized and rural/coastal corridors have disproportionately high fatality rates relative to their populations.

Raw totals tell a different story

While Miami-Dade recorded the highest raw total (647 fatalities), its high population puts its fatality rate at 2.41 per 10k residents (#23 overall).

"Motorcycles offer far less physical protection than standard vehicles, making riders much more vulnerable when a crash occurs. Understanding where these fatalities are happening most frequently is essential for raising driver awareness and improving safety on Florida's roads."

Methodology

How the index was built

This study by the research team at Andrew Pickett Law ranks Florida counties by motorcyclist fatalities per 10,000 residents, drawing on fatal crash records from 2015 to 2024 to identify where riders face the greatest risk.

To maintain statistical significance and control for volatile year-over-year fluctuations in smaller communities, counties with fewer than 50 total raw fatalities over the 10-year period were removed from the final ranking.
